Changing of the guard

Last September, we added two new Reference Assistants to the Steacie team: Janet Howarth and Jaspreet Bhatthal. Along with Ricardo Laskaris, you will see them staffing most of the shifts on the reference desk. Besides general questions, Janet can help you with map/geospatial questions, and Jaspreet can help you with applied health sciences and biology questions.

Chris Mesquida, one of Steacie Library’s Reference Assistants, has retired after 30-odd years of service. Here are some photos from his retirement party, at which he served homemade couscous with lamb and chicken, and summarized his research in evolutionary psychology and the causes of war.

iPad on Reserve

New computers at Steacie

Eight public workstations at Steacie have been upgraded to Dell Optiplex 980′s:

The upgraded workstations are the eight sit-down ones located directly in front of the Reference Desk:

The computers are each equipped with a DVD Multi Recorder, which is capable of writing to any format of blank DVD (+/-, R/RW), including Dual Layer. Most importantly, they’re also fast! They have 2GB of RAM, twice as much as the older computers.

SPSS 19 Now Available

Steacie Library once again has a license for SPSS, specifically, v.19. As described on our List of Available Software, it is installed on all workstations in our basement computer lab. This lab is currently closed on weekends, and SPSS is not available on any other computers at Steacie. You can, however, access SPSS at any time (including on weekends), using your own laptop or home computer via WebFAS, the Computing department’s system for remote access to licensed software (including SPSS 19, SAS 9.2, and MS Office 2010). An FAS account is required for WebFAS access. FAS accounts may be set up using Manage My Services. And to access that, you need a Passport York account. Simple!

Extended weekday hours

Steacie Library will have extended weekday hours from November 22 to December 22, closing at 1:00 a.m.

On weekends and on December 23 we maintain our regular hours.

The library closes from December 24 to January 3, and reopens with regular hours on January 4.
